summary/abstract:Las hormonas tiroideas son cruciales para el desarrollo normal del cerebro y del sistema nervioso del bebé. Durante el primer trimestre, los primeros 3 meses de embarazo, el bebé depende del suministro de la hormona tiroidea de la madre, que llega a través de la placenta NIH external link (en inglés). Alrededor de la semana 12, la tiroides del bebé empieza a funcionar por sí sola, pero no produce suficiente hormona tiroidea hasta las 18 a 20 semanas de embarazo.
Dos hormonas relacionadas con el embarazo, la gonadotropina coriónica humana (hCG, por sus siglas en inglés) y el estrógeno, causan concentraciones más altas de la hormona tiroidea en la sangre. Durante el embarazo, en las mujeres sanas la tiroides se agranda ligeramente pero no lo suficiente como para que un profesional de atención médica la pueda palpar durante un examen físico.
