Orbitopatía tiroidea

summary/abstract:La orbitopatía tiroidea es una enfermedad de origen inmunológico que afecta el funcionamiento de la glándula tiroides por un lado y a componentes orbitarios, en conjunto o aisladamente. Cursa con un aumento de volumen de los músculos extraoculares y grasa orbitaria provocando proptosis o exoftalmos (ojos saltones).
La mayoría de los casos, la enfermedad viene asociada a un hipertiroidismo, aunque también puede ocurrir en pacientes con hipotiroidismo e incluso en personas sin enfermedad tiroidea.
Ocurre porque ciertas moléculas están presentes tanto en la glándula tiroides como en la órbita, y reaccionan contra la glándula y contra los tejidos orbitarios (tejido graso orbitario y los músculos extraoculares) inflamándolos.
