Early Diagnosis of Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)
source: Horizon Pharma
year: N/A
summary/abstract:Early Symptoms
TED can first present with signs or symptoms such as sensitivity to light, a feeling of grittiness in the eyes, excessive tearing, eye pain, or dry eyes. However, these symptoms are often confused with other conditions, such as allergies or dry eye symptoms. Evidence shows that even these first, seemingly mild symptoms can negatively affect patient quality of life. Overlooking them can lead to unnecessary patient suffering and delayed diagnosis of TED.
Diagnosing Active TED
Any of these early symptoms should prompt further screening to determine a diagnosis of Active TED, especially if they have intensified over the last 1-3 months. Also assess how TED may be affecting the patient’s overall quality of life, ability to work, or ability to perform day-to-day tasks.
