summary/abstract:Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system turns against your body. Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism or the overproduction of thyroid hormones. Hormones produced by the thyroid gland play important roles in the functioning of multiple body systems; therefore, the hyperthyroidism caused by Graves’ disease can result in a myriad of symptoms.
